Concept
Long-term storage in-space for in-space data or on-earth data.
Longer Description
The data needs both on earth and in space are going to continually increase. We believe that while incumbents may shift some form of storage to in-space, there will be a variety of alternative data storage companies built aimed at either economies.
Other Thoughts
- High security need informed by data sovereignty / fear of government and high willingness to pay - cryptocurrency especially seems like a strong use case; ConnectX is working on this
- Why is there a need for in-space data centers?
- Broader question is how do you simplify the storage, processing, and transfer cycle of data coming down from a satellite and going into a data center, or adjusting settings on satellites or sensor use specifically.
- Amazon ground station attempts to solve this in a different way. Control satellites through the cloud and the long term building data centers with satellite dishes integrated.
- Offering computing power to process satellite imaging data or monitor distributed sensors for iot applications at the site is often more efficient
- Planet takes 10 terabytes of data a day. How do they currently manage their data & at what cost?
- Many people see this as a way to avoid data regulations and jurisdictional regulations
